Generation X-istential Blues
(from "Generation X-istential Blues")
Tossed a coin in a wishin' well-
The water was so muddy,
Couldn't see where it fell
So I turned around and headed home,
And hoped that it would make it through.
Met a wise man along the way-
He sparkled when he smiled,
But had nothin to say
Except "Doin' nothin' ain't a waste of time-
As long as you got nothin' to do..."
CHORUS
Well, I used to have a dream,
But I hocked it-
Traded for the silver and gold.
You know it put a little change
In my pocket-
But the jingle & the jangle
Stopped makin' sense a long time ago...
Cut my hair just to spite "the man",
Traded in a Lexus
For a Volkswagen van
Threw away those flannel shirts
I got at Abercrombie & Fitch.
Made a stop at the thrift shop-
I couldn't get the van
Into the parking lot...
All the spaces were taken up
By Volvos and Mercedes Benz
CHORUS:
Well, we used to have a dream
But we hocked it-
Traded for the silver and gold.
You know it put a little change
In our pocket-
But the jingle & the jangle
Stopped makin' sense a long time ago...
Sold the van, got a mountain bike,
A pack to stow my gear
When I go for a hike,
Wool socks, Birkenstocks,
And a user's guide to Livin' in Zen.
Thought them changes would do me good-
But I'm still tossin' coins in fountains
And knockin' on wood.
Guess I'll turn to booze & rock n roll-
Sell the rights to VH-1
CHORUS
Well, I used to have a dream,
But I hocked it-
Traded for the silver and gold.
You know it put a little change
In my pocket-
But the jingle & the jangle
Stopped makin' sense a long time ago...
